The Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association (ARMA) is proud to announce the winners of the 2024 Excellence in Asphalt Roofing Awards. This year marks a historic moment with not one but two gold medalists. The achievement highlights the exceptional talent, hard work, and dedication of the award recipients. From the restoration of a historic church to the development of an environmentally conscious apartment complex, each project embodies the core benefits of asphalt roofing systems.

“We garnered 94 submissions, with two projects achieving gold medal status, making it another triumphant year,” states Reed Hitchcock, ARMA executive vice president. “The awards program continues to serve as a platform for honoring excellence, pushing the boundaries of what is possible in asphalt roofing, and inspiring the industry to reach new milestones.”

The program recognizes low- and steep-slope asphalt roofing projects across North America based on four categories: Why Asphalt, Project Challenges, Distinction, and Beauty. Projects with the highest scores are recognized with prestigious Gold, Silver, or Bronze medals. This year, ARMA has introduced Best-in-Class categories, enhancing diversity among winners and celebrating a broader range of achievements. These standout categories, which are awarded solely on judges’ nominations, include In the Neighborhood, Commercial/Mixed Use, Craftsmanship, and Technical Difficulty.

    Gold Award Winners:

Dennis General Contractor – Fleshman Creek

    • Project Overview: Dennis General Contractor replaced the entire roof of Fleshman Creek after discovering rotten sheathing throughout. Custom-bent valley metal pieces were meticulously installed on varied pitches, showcasing skillful craftsmanship. The choice of Malarkey’s Legacy Shingles in Black Oak demonstrated strategic decision-making for optimal performance in Montana’s demanding climate. The selection provided enhanced protection against hail and wind and remained within the client’s budget. The residential home, nestled in picturesque valleys, illustrates the team’s expertise in preserving rustic charm while delivering a durable, eye-catching asphalt roofing system.

Boss Roofing-Siding Experts – Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church

    • Project Overview: Boss Roofing-Siding Experts excelled in restoring the deteriorating roof and steeple of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church. The church chose GAF Timberline HDZ Shingles in Pewter Gray for their top quality, durability, and affordability. The meticulous project unfolded in two phases. Phase one involved the removal of the old roof and installation of new shingles over two weeks, followed by a one-week focus on steeple restoration in the second phase. Due to the historic significance of the church, the project required special considerations to preserve its architectural integrity as a listed historic landmark. The successful completion provided a resilient roof and steeple that earned gratitude from the church.

    Silver Award Winner:

Conde Roofing – Asphalt and Copper on the Lake

    • Project Overview: Conde Roofing showcased excellence in the Asphalt and Copper on the Lake project, incorporating asphalt roofing for weather resistance in New Hampshire’s varied climate. The project emphasizes the importance of coordinated installation efforts and is a testament to the reliability and durability of a properly installed asphalt roofing system. Beyond technical complexity, the project’s aesthetic appeal is remarkable. The arched copper entryway, copper valleys, CertainTeed Landmark Pro Max Def Weathered Wood Shingles, and cedar shake siding contribute to a visually stunning and harmonious design. When paired with its natural lakeside setting, the project achieves a level of beauty and sophistication, offering the homeowners protection and peace of mind.

    Bronze Award Winner:

True North Roofing LLC – Historical Beauty

    • Project Overview: True North Roofing LLC restored a 120-year-old historic home with steep pitches and intricate roof details. The majority of the roof had a 12/12 pitch, while the turret tower boasted a 20/12 pitch. The 18-member crew displayed expertise, overcoming a sudden downpour during the second day of installation. The homeowner selected the Class Four CertainTeed Northgate ClimateFlex Shingles for their economic value and long-term success, blending historical authenticity with modern durability. The resulting roof, featuring dramatic peaks, sweeping valleys, and vibrant green shingles, stands as a majestic testament to craftsmanship, historical reverence, and contemporary energy in the Uptown area of Minneapolis.

    Best-In-Class Award Winners:

Prospect Waterproofing Company – 300 M Street (Commercial/Mixed Use Category)

    • Project Overview: In the heart of Washington, D.C., the Cielo at 300 M Street is a lavish 427-unit apartment building that spans a city block. The scope of Prospect Waterproofing Company’s work on this new construction project was extensive, involving 58,000 square feet of hot rubberized asphalt IRMA roofing (American Hydrotech Inc.), 17,000 square feet of green roofing, 22,000 square feet of architectural pavers on pedestals, and 12,000 square feet of hot rubberized asphalt waterproofing across multiple building elevations. The project achieved LEED Gold certification, incorporating sustainable elements such as green terraces and roofs. The completed project offers residents a distinctive and sustainable living experience with captivating views of the nation’s capital.

Commercial Roofing & Waterproofing Hawaii – Kapiʻolani Medical Center for Women & Children (Technical Difficulty Category)

    • Project Overview: The Kapiʻolani Medical Center for Women & Children, a healthcare symbol in Hawaii for a century, faced critical roof leaks, necessitating a meticulous re-roofing effort. The project entailed removing and replacing the compromised Physician’s Office Building roofing system, requiring precision due to the medical facility’s nature. Working around existing equipment and penetrations, Commercial Roofing & Waterproofing Hawaii, Inc. stripped the roof down to the deck, installing a new Polyglass modified bitumen system with proper flashings. The project exemplified building a durable, long-lasting roof capable of withstanding the projected utility and constant access.

ARMA will honor winners at the 2024 International Roofing Expo from February 6-8 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Winning companies will receive a monetary prize (Gold – $2,000; Silver – $1,000; Bronze – $500), an official ARMA certificate, promotions on ARMA’s website and social media platforms, authority-boosting materials, and national and local trade media exposure.
