MATERIALS

Homeowners want to enjoy their outdoor living spaces year-round, and more manufacturers now are making that possible. This deck is made of Voyage Decking featuring Surestone technology. Crafted with crushed limestone, Surestone decking reduces heat and offers strength-to- weight ratio and a slip resistant grip, as well as has virtually no thermal expansion or contraction. Additionally, Surestone materials combine natural wood-grain patterns with rich colors.
All Surestone materials are warranted for installation in the ground or in water. Many of the brand’s decking lines offer a 50-year structural, 25-year stain and fade, and 25-year removal and replacement (limited) warranties.

THE RETROFIT
With a stunning view of the water and the Georgian Bay, this property had an existing deck with a bulky wood railing that was outdated and in need of a facelift. Simcoe Decks worked with the client to create a seamless and uninterrupted view from every part of the deck and within the house.
The family said they wanted a low-maintenance deck, rich with detail, even if it took extra time to create. They not only wanted to take in the stunning views of Lake Huron, but also required creative solutions to accommodate lake gear and accessories.

Because Simcoe Decks’ crew chose to create custom board lengths by heat bending the composite decking, they had some trial and error around a number of corners where joints would crack. The team lost a fair number of boards in the process and had to account for this in the initial stages of planning.
Additionally, the existing upper balcony was completely cantilevered, and the crew had to gauge how the cantilever would support new decking. The front part of the house’s preexisting wrap-around deck had to be completely removed with multiple modifications along the way to accommodate design changes for a more timeless and unified look across pre-existing and newly built features. Simcoe Decks also removed many old design features, including stone landscaping in the front of the house, which added extra time to the overall project.
Simcoe Decks’ custom heat bending of composite boards beyond traditional lengths resulted in a waterfall edge effect. On the front portion of the deck, the crew custom bent all the boards to create a seamless look while providing multiple storage cubbies for lake gear.
