Self-adhering Underlayment Is Designed for Metal and Other Primary Roofing

Tarco announces LeakBarrier FS500, a premium self-adhering modified bitumen underlayment for metal and other types of primary roofing.

FS500 is comprised of a specially formulated rubberized asphaltic adhesive compound that withstands ‎temperature up to 250 F and a high-strength, cross laminated polyolefinic film that has been specially treated to provide enhanced skid resistance. Thus, two distinct ‎water barriers are formed by the rubberized asphalt compound and the impermeable HDPE film laminate. The anti-skid treatment on the upper surface provides good traction and walkability.

The HDPE layer also reinforces the otherwise non-reinforced 35 mil (0.9 mm) thick rubberized asphaltic adhesive. The ‎aggressive self-adhesive compound strongly bonds with ‎the film surface even under cold conditions, which yields an instant ‎watertight lap seam. Such an immediate bond is difficult to achieve with granule surfaced ‎underlayment.

LeakBarrier FS500 underlayment is designed to prevent leaks caused by ice and water damming and wind-‎driven rain, and is highly effective in critical roofing areas such as valleys, ridges, coping joints, ‎chimneys, vents, dormers, skylights, and other flashing areas. Besides being an excellent ‎underlayment for shingle roofs, it is also well-suited for use in ‎mechanically attached tile roof systems.‎

The rubberized asphalt compound self-seals around nails, while the high tensile and tear strength characteristics of the high strength film imparts exceptional ‎durability. The white color of the HDPE surface film provides a cooler working surface. UV (ultraviolet) additives to the HDPE film allow it to stay intact when exposed to the UV rays and other elements in the environment. The underlayment can be left exposed for up to 90 days.

FS500 is very pliable and conforms readily to the contours of the roof. It allows for clean, easy-to-handle application. The split back release film peels off for easy installation and handling. The membrane lays flat and resists wrinkling.

A roll of FS500 is 66 feet 8 inches long and 36 inches wide. The nominal thickness is 40 mil (1.0 mm). It weighs 55 pounds (nominal) and provides gross coverage of two squares (200 square feet).

    Additional Resources

The LeakBarrier FS500 product data sheet provides additional information about the surface preparation, application guidelines, storage, and general precautions as well as physical properties as measured by applicable ASTM standards.

Tarco offers a 30 Year Limited Warranty on this product.
