Kim and Scott Vargo, the couple behind home-renovation blog, Yellow Brick Home, had the rare opportunity to complete a two-part kitchen renovation in their two-flat-style home located in the Logan Square neighborhood of Chicago. A two-flat is a 2-story building with an apartment unit on each floor. The Vargos renovated both units and are now renting them.
For each kitchen, the Vargos focused on metal choices and cabinet color, which helped dictate the style of countertop they would need.
For the countertops in Unit 1, they chose FENIX in Nero Ingo. FENIX is an innovative surface made from layering pigments. For Unit 2, the Vargos chose Everform Solid Surface (an acrylic surface) in Bleached Concrete because they felt the durable material most closely resembled stone. Both countertop products are available through Formica Corp.
“We first became interested in Formica as a budget-friendly option, but as our samples began to arrive in the mail, Scott and I continued to ask each other, ‘How is this so good?’,” recalls Kim in her blog. “Initially, we scooped up samples in every product and color imaginable, unsure of the direction we wanted to go with each kitchen design. We were impressed with the numerous options and products, but even more so with the quality. A perfect example of this: During a recent site visit from our architect, he took one look at our Unit 2 kitchen and said, ‘I thought you were using Formica countertops. This looks like stone.’”
