Color was key when working with entrepreneurs in Walla Walla, Wash. The couple purchased a vintage home in a historic area and wanted to create dedicated space for entertaining friends and family—a beloved pastime. They hired Swivel Interiors, which crafted a custom concept for the well-traveled modern-design-loving clients.
Working in the home’s almost 2,000-square-foot basement, DeMambro Architects created two guest bedrooms and a home office while retaining a significant section for a large multi-use entertaining area. In fact, the vino is always on tap in the new glass-enclosed wine room, which is lit with color-changing LEDs.
Inspired by couture runway fashion collections, Swivel Interiors used bold colors, patterns, and textures to make the entire basement (from the bedrooms to the lounge area) feel lively, fun and welcoming. A large, multicolored sectional anchors the main lounge space and provides plenty of room for parties. The various patterns of upholstery—stripes, chevrons and solids—are akin to a man’s tie collection, and the purple and yellow sconces above subtly suggest jewelry or accent buttons. Floral wallpaper, rugs and a custom Mondrian-inspired sliding glass door that hides the laundry and mechanical areas showcase Swivel Interiors’ ability to bring together bold elements to create an energetic, flexible space where the clients can create memories with family and friends.
