The retirement plan for a Seattle couple included the adventure of a lifetime on the San Juan Islands in the Pacific Northwest. They fell in love with a breathtaking waterfront property that included a rustic and unique home. The interior finishes (knotted pine paneled and post walls, a stacked stone fireplace and farm-style finishes) were charming but collectively a refinement was desired. Swivel Interiors was asked to help preserve key elements while making the overall spaces more current and reflective of the new inhabitants’ modern proclivities.
Kathleen Glossa, founder of Swivel Interiors, created a plan based on a curated mix of contemporary and Mid-century furnishings with renovation of some frequently used spaces. A new main bath and the conversion of a home office into a media room (for watching the Seahawks) were key areas in the remodel along with all new lighting and paint colors. The purposefully contrasted mix of island-inspired interior finishes with contemporary furnishings and clean modern updates gives a fresh perspective to the spaces.
The updated spaces include furnishings designed by Swivel Interiors. The limestone slab coffee table was designed to anchor in the sunken living room. The deep blue wall cabinet with interiors customized to hold a lifetime of curated table linens was also designed by Swivel Interiors and made by an island-based craftsman.
A new built-in media cabinet with cubbies that hide speakers and ancillary equipment was designed to house the flat-screen television along with a mix of display items, many created by local island artists. A large sliding door, finished to match the cabinetry and fashioned with a custom-designed hardware pull completes the new space. These items were also built on the island.
The main bath had freestanding vintage sinks with no counter or storage space and a small on-angle wall shower with a curtain for privacy. Swivel Interiors designed a new bath layout that provided ample counter and storage space for both clients along with a new large curbless shower, enveloped in limestone. The wet-rated sconces were a perfect solution for lighting in the shower; the pitched wood ceiling is shared with the greater bedroom suite. A minimalist and serene ambiance of the bath interiors stem from clean design lines and natural materials like vertical grain fir.
